Help Hawaii Wildfire Survivors Navigate Disaster Issues

In August 2023, a wildfire devastated the Hawaii island community of Lahaina on Maui.

At this time, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii (LASH) has requested that individual volunteers and supporting organizations to hold their offers for direct service / support until needs are fully assessed.

In times of crisis, patience and coordination are key to avoid duplication of efforts and reducing confusion in the community. The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii (LASH), in coordination with the Hawaii State Bar Association, is leading the charge in disaster legal response in Maui.

As of now, there are no volunteer opportunities for mainland U.S. attorneys due to restrictions on outside practice of law. However, as needs continue to be assessed and wildfire survivors seek out legal help, that may change. Please check back regularly to see if volunteer opportunities arise. Hawaii-licensed attorneys may contact the Hawaii State Bar Association to sign up as a hotline volunteer.

If you are willing and able, please consider donating to LASH while we continue to assess needs and mount the response to this catastrophic event.

If you are interested in supporting immediate relief efforts, you can consider volunteering or donating to pre-existing, coordinated recovery efforts with:

Through the Disaster Legal Services Program, the ABA Young Lawyers Division (ABA YLD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provide immediate temporary legal assistance to disaster survivors at no charge. Since September 2007, the DLS has responded to 178 declared disasters in 44 states and 4 U.S. territories.
